alright so my family is cursed when it comes to thursdays.
two thursdays ago: learned that my nana has cancer
last thursday: my car crash
today: my dad cut half his finger off on a skill saw. They are currently re-attaching it in surgery.
and thursdays are the only day of the week that i have to be in school all day. Thursday suck. seriously.
But today in school we had a really powerful demonstation and then guest speaker. THIS IS WORTH YOU READING! A car crash was staged out on the baseball field. We heard screaming and the next thing we know is that an ambulance is here with a whole medical crew. The jaws of life show up to pull the two girls out of the car. The medics do a breathalizer on the driver, who is still conscious. She is legally intoxicated. (Even though in NH anything about zero is illegal to drive with) The other girl however is still lying there, and then from over head comes the medical helicopter and lands in the field. They airlift the girl away. A mother shows up and over the intercom system the EMT's have to explain to her that her daughter will not live because her best friend was driving under the influence and killed her. (tears start rolling here) A herse (spelling?) shows and the mother has to go inside to ID the body of her daughter who has passed away en route to the hospital. The other girl is taken away in a police car for negligent homicide. powerful stuff.
That whole scenario was a re-enactment of what happened to our guest speaker three years ago. She told us her entire story and how she didn't even feel impaired when she got in the car. Her life is seriously hell now. She killed her very best friend and seriously injured herself. She won't drive for at least five more years. In NH the legal BAC of .08 doesn't apply, they can arrest you for anything over 0%. Her BAC was .06% when they took her blood at the hospital. She was charge with dui, wreckless driving, and negligent homicide. She went to prison for a year when she was attacked and harrassed daily because she was "cute". She can't find a job, can't live on her own, former friends won't even look at her, and is still burried in legal cases.
why do people still think its okay to drink and drive?? This assembly ran twice during the day, i went during the freshman/sophmore one because i was in computer class. I was so ashamed of how some people were acting. someone actually laughed at the picture of the car. It really hit me then how much i've matured since then. We all have. My senior friends that i was with were all crying with me. Even the guys were shedding tears. We've lost friends or family to alcohol, we know what a serious problem this is, why can't freshman see that and take it seriously. Accidents due to alcohol have been such a problem at my school this year. It is out of control.
Let me know what you guys think, is this a nationwide problem that has just gotten out of control or is my town just screwed up? I wish every school could do something like this demostration, it was completely eye opening.
